Introduce students to the concept of patterns by using everyday objects like tiles or beads. Engage them in creating their own patterns and identifying the rules behind them.
Start with a visual pattern on the board and ask students to describe it. Then, have them come up with the next two elements in the pattern.
- What is a pattern?
- Can you give an example of a repeating pattern?
- How do you identify the rule of a pattern?
- What is the difference between a growing and a repeating pattern?
- Why are patterns important in mathematics?
Students may think all patterns are the same or only consist of numbers. Highlight the variety in patterns, including shapes and colors.
Play a 'Pattern Relay' where students create patterns using blocks, and each team must add to the pattern correctly. The first team to complete their pattern wins!
Encourage students to think critically about how patterns are present in nature and daily life.
Create a pattern at home using items you find around you.
